A classic English lake species with a long specimen-fishing tradition behind it, tench are bottom feeders strongly associated with the first warm mornings of late spring — the sight of feeding bubbles rising in the margins at dawn is a defining image of the UK tench season.

- —Most active feeding window is often the first hour or two of daylight, tailing off as the day warms and other lake activity picks up
- —Tolerant of low oxygen and warm, weedy water that many other species avoid, making overlooked corners of a lake worth a look
- —Feeds confidently in numbers when conditions are right, which is why loose-fed swims can produce quick multi-fish spells
Late May into June is the classic tench opener, with early-morning starts strongly favoured — bites often slow noticeably once the sun is well up.
