Set up a 4–5AA stick float, shotted with a bulk of No.4s two-thirds of the way down and two No.6 droppers below, to present a single or double red maggot just tripping bottom at 5–8 feet. Cast slightly upstream, hold the line just on the taut side, and trot the float through 15–25 metres of steady glide, letting the bait lead the float very slightly. Feed little and often — 8–10 maggots every cast via catapult — to establish a loose-feed line that pulls roach up into the water column through the session. If bites slow, shorten the rig by 2–3 inches to present the bait fractionally off bottom.

If it’s quiet
If the trotted maggot draws no response after 20–30 minutes, switch to a 4BB waggler fished overdepth by 3–4 inches with a single caster on the hook and a pinch of groundbait (liquidised bread and casters) introduced by small balls to hold the shoal tighter in the swim — autumn roach often respond to caster over maggot once water temperature drops toward the lower end of range.
