Bass Lure fishingSolent shoreline

Work a soft plastic paddle tail on a light jig head through the tide run off pier structure and groynes at dusk
Best window: Dusk into dark, 1–2 hours either side of low water slack on a flooding tide

Tactic

Cast a 4–5 inch paddle tail shad on a 10–14g jig head uptide at an angle and let the flooding tide swing it across and down along the edge of pier pilings, groyne ends, or any submerged reef structure. Retrieve with a slow, steady wind just fast enough to activate the tail, occasionally pausing to let the lure flutter and sink — bass in the Solent in May are often holding tight to structure ambushing sandeels and small baitfish as tidal flow accelerates. Keep the lure in the lower third of the water column, bumping or ticking close to the seabed on the pause. Work multiple angles from the same position before moving, as bass can be holding in specific current seams.

Why
  • Mid-May in the Solent sees sea temperatures typically around 13–15°C — bass are increasingly active and moving onto shallow inshore marks from their winter grounds, feeding hard ahead of spawning season wrapping up
  • Solent tidal flow is strong and complex; bass use pier legs, groyne ends, and rock edges as ambush points in the tidal current, particularly on the flood as food items concentrate
  • Dusk is a prime window for Solent bass — reduced light triggers bold feeding behaviour, and pier lights can create a bait-attracting halo effect after dark
  • Sandeels are the dominant forage species in the Solent in May; a natural-coloured paddle tail in sandeel profile (olive/silver or clear/glitter) is a well-proven match-the-hatch choice at this time of year
  • May daytime water is clearer and bass can be spooky in bright conditions; fishing the last light and after-dark window with a lighter fluorocarbon leader significantly improves takes

If it’s quiet
If the paddle tail in the lower column produces nothing after 20–30 minutes, switch to a 120–140mm surface popper or a shallow-diving hard lure (e.g. Megabass X-80 or Maria Chase BW) and work the surface and mid-column across lit pier edges — bass in May will be willing to hit a sub-surface lure in low light, and a change in presentation depth and sound profile can trigger a response when bottom-hugging fish aren't committing.
This plan is based on well-established seasonal norms for the Solent in mid-May and proven local bass behaviour around tidal structure; actual sea temperature, swell height, and precise tidal times for the specific pier on the day were not provided and will materially affect performance.
