Bass Lure fishing — Chesil Beach, Dorset

Cast a 4–5 inch soft plastic sandeel or shad on a 10–15g bullet-nosed or flat-sided jig head along the first and second shingle bars where breaking waves create aerated, food-rich surf tables. Work a slow, erratic sink-and-draw retrieve with twitches during the pause, keeping the lure in the upper third to mid-water column rather than crawling the bottom — Chesil bass in summer are actively hunting upward on rising baitfish and sandeels dislodged by surf action. Vary cast angles from directly into the wave zone to a 45-degree angle across the bank face to cover the lateral current seams that run parallel to the beach, where bass intercept food channelled along the shingle.

• —Late August sees Chesil bass in peak summer feeding mode — water temperatures typically 16–19°C at this point, which keeps fish aggressive and feeding actively in the surf zone rather than sitting deep
• —Sandeels are the dominant baitfish at Chesil through summer; bass school along the shingle ridge drop-offs to intercept them when tidal movement pushes baitfish through the shallow tables
• —Dusk fishing exploits reduced light penetration that draws bass into shallower water and onto the shingle with reduced caution — bass are strongly crepuscular on this exposed beach
• —A falling or mid-tide on a 3–4 day waning moon phase would be ideal (seasonal norm for this period), as receding water concentrates bait against the shingle contours; even on a less optimal phase the dusk light window overrides
• —Late summer swells from SW-W directions (prevailing Chesil norm) create productive coloured water and foam lines — a bit of colour and chop dramatically improves soft plastic effectiveness over flat, clear surf conditions
